When the Southern California fires began to spread, we noticed a glaring issue: countless resource websites were either behind paywalls, cluttered with pop-up ads, or simply not mobile-friendly.
Responding to this crisis, we developed an AI-powered, ad-free mobile resource for fire victims, hosted on here 3tone Digital, where critical information could be accessed swiftly.
Empowering Communities in Crisis: A Mobile Resource for SoCal Fire Victims
This meant the people who most needed critical fire-related information—such as where to find emergency shelter, supplies, or help—often struggled to navigate through barriers or irrelevant content.
In any crisis situation, we believe vital information should be quick and easy to access, especially on a smartphone. So, my wife and I decided to create a mobile-focused, ad-free resource, built with one clear goal: help people find what they need fast.
The urgency of the situation demanded a tool that was not only functional but also compassionate in its design.
Rapid Response: Building a Lifeline in One Night
The project was hosted on 3tone Digital and came to life in a single night. The resources themselves were primarily gathered through AI, then organized into a clean format that made searching by city or required service straightforward.
The site’s CSV parser and search features were built with the assistance of CursorAI, an AI pair-programming tool that helped optimize the data handling pipeline.
This synergy of technology and urgency allowed us to provide a vital service in record time, showcasing how AI can be a powerful ally in crisis response.
Beyond just the metrics, the positive feedback from the community was a strong signal that simplifying access to crucial information during a crisis can make a real difference.
Behind the Scenes: Local Development and AI Integration
During development, we used WPEngine’s local environment to handle some of the initial testing. This allowed us to quickly iterate on the site’s functionality, ensuring that it would remain stable once it went live.
While we were able to pull everything together in a single night, it’s important to acknowledge that this speed was only possible because we leveraged reliable hosting tools and integrated AI assistance for data tasks. The local environment from WPEngine was crucial for this rapid development cycle, providing a safe space to test and refine, thus ensuring the site was both robust and responsive when launched.

Building data-driven tools is something we’re passionate about. From crisis resources to other kinds of digital solutions, we enjoy diving into datasets, writing efficient parsers, and creating user-friendly interfaces that make complex information accessible to everyone.
It’s also rewarding when a community embraces these efforts, as demonstrated by the social media engagement the tool received. This kind of feedback fuels our drive to continue developing tools that serve and empower communities.
Paywalls or intrusive ads have no place in an emergency. In times of crisis, quick and free access to essentials—shelter, supplies, emergency contacts—should be a given.
