Recently, we had a project resurface: a client wanted a “brochure website” with no maintenance and just a check-in once a year. While this isn’t recommended—even with security plugins installed and automatic updates enabled—it was her request.
Long story short, the site was hacked at the GoDaddy domain level. Yes, our infamous GoDaddy horror story resurfaced. After three hours on a support call with GoDaddy and two upgraded security packages later, we were finally able to restore her site. I’ve said it before and will say it again: GoDaddy is not secure and will only help after upselling you to the next security package (it’s literally the biggest scam that people keep buying into).
There is a happy ending! We restored the website and are now working on providing a proactive maintenance plan and migrating off of GoDaddy. Yay! A lesson for you all: maintenance should be done monthly. GoDaddy is not secure, so leave as soon as possible before you experience a horror story. Consider your website like a house; imagine not maintaining your house for six months—I’m pretty sure it would be overrun with little critters!
