Let’s talk about a little monster that slows down a lot of great ideas. Analysis paralysis in web design.
It’s that state of overthinking a situation so much that you never actually take action. Sound familiar?
Over the last two months, I’ve talked to four people who want to build a website but haven’t started. Not because they don’t care, but because they’re stuck staring at too many options.

Platforms like WordPress, Wix, Shopify, Squarespace, and frameworks like Next.js or Laravel can feel overwhelming. So let’s cut to the chase and talk about why I choose WordPress for web design almost every time.
WordPress Puts You in Control
Big website builders spend millions on ads to make their platforms look perfect. That money comes from users paying for convenience they don’t really need.
WordPress flips that model on its head. It’s open source, which means you own it, shape it, and control it. Developers like me love that freedom because we can create custom post types, connect taxonomies, and build anything we dream up.
It runs on the LAMP stack: Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. Some folks love to hate PHP, calling it outdated or messy. But, PHP powers more than 75% of the entire web.
And WordPress? It runs over 43% of all websites. Those numbers don’t lie.
Why Not Wix or Shopify?
Sure, you can edit code in Wix or Shopify. But that access is limited and changes whenever they decide to update.
The cost isn’t pretty either.
- Wix eCommerce can run you about $1,900 a year
- Shopify can hit $24,000 a year if you want more admins or faster checkout
Compare that to WordPress hosting for $35 a year or even less if you shop around. That’s a no-brainer.
WordPress Features Keep Getting Better
Some folks tried WordPress years ago and never came back. But it has evolved like crazy.
Here’s what’s new and worth loving:
- A full-site editor that makes building pages simple and organized
- Predefined components and free pattern libraries from the community
- Built-in eCommerce with WooCommerce where you just add a payment provider
These updates make it powerful, flexible, and beginner-friendly. And with AI now in the mix, the learning curve is even smoother.
I don’t mean AI that writes everything for you, though it can. I’m talking about AI that helps you code smarter, design faster, and enhance your site’s style and interactivity.
As I always say, the sky’s the limit.
The WordPress Community
Coming from a Drupal background, I can say with confidence that WordPress has the friendliest, most helpful community out there.
There are endless resources like blogs, videos, and forums. The plugin and theme repositories are goldmines. Ask a question, and chances are someone’s already solved it.
WordPress pros love to share what they know. I’ve seen small questions spark big learning moments.
Stop Overthinking, Start Building
If you’re stuck comparing every tool under the sun, take a breath. Pick one. Start small.
WordPress is powerful, flexible, and affordable. More than that, it’s proven.
The hardest step is the first one. After that, momentum takes over.
So here’s my advice. Don’t let analysis paralysis hold you back. Your idea deserves to exist, not sit in your notes app.
Start building today.
